SOME PEOPLE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE NU-LIVER “PC” Licorice is generally a very safe herb when consumed in small amounts. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has rated licorice as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) [Code of Federal Regulations] [Title 21, Volume 3] [Revised as of April 1, 2004] [CITE: 21CFR184.1408] as an additive to most foods. However, when consumed in large amounts, licorice can exhibit side-effects in certain individuals.
Some people are sensitive to ‘glycyrrhizin,’ the major extract in licorice root. In these individuals, this glycyrrhizin extract may potentially increase the sodium content of blood, thereby gradually increasing blood pressure. This can also cause a loss of potassium (hypokalemia) that can react with certain medication they may be taking.
Published scientific reports and clinical experiments performed to determine the amount of glycyrrhizin extract (derived from licorice roots) needed to raise blood pressure have resulted in a consensus. Consuming up to 100mg to 120 mg of glycyrrhizin extract from licorice root is safe for most healthy adults. Since Chinese licorice root contains approximately 4% glycyrrhizin extract, regular ingestion of licorice root would be limited to about 3 grams (3,000 mg) of the raw herb per day.
Nu-Liver PC contains a daily dosage of 12 mg of glycyrrhizin extract. Although the amount of ‘glycyrrhizin extract’ (from licorice root) contained in each dose of Nu-Liver PC is less than even the safety margin proposed by various scientific studies and articles, the following recommendation is included on the label of every bottle:
